Varicocele is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum, similar to the veins that appear in the legs. It is a common condition that affects one out of six men, usually, younger men within the age of 15–25, and is not due to a serious condition.
Varicocele can be linked to infertility problems as it contributes to low sperm production and decreased sperm quality. in this article, we will be looking at the causes, symptoms, and the best cure for varicocele without undergoing surgery. Keep reading!
Causes of varicocele
Varicocele normally takes place during puberty which is caused because the valves of the small veins in the scrotum do not function well, this causes the vein (blood vessels) to become larger. The one-way valve along the vein opens to allow blood to flow towards the heart but when the flow begins to slow, the valve closes to stop blood from flowing back. In a situation where the valve does not function well (it’s not clear why the valves do not work well), blood can flow back to cause a pool in the lower part of the vein which makes it become bigger (they dilate) to form varicocele.
Symptoms of varicocele
Varicocele rarely produces symptoms, if symptoms do occur, they are felt as dull ache or heaviness of the testicle which gets worse during the day and in hot weather. Varicocele can be noticed during the physical examination as the dilated vein can be felt, seen, and the testicle is smaller on the varicocele side.
other possible symptoms may include:
- Pain in the scrotum — From a dull ache to a sharp, stabbing pain
- Testicular atrophy — The shrinking of one or both testicles.
- A lump in the scrotum or testicle — Typically, the lump is not painful
- Enlargement of a testicle — The swollen side will feel heavy
- Pain that is relieved when you lie down on your back
When to treat Varicocele
Varicocele is harmless when it gives no symptoms but there are some situations in which it causes concern. Such as:
Infertility
Studies have revealed that infertility is higher in men with varicocele when compared with those who do not have a varicocele. The reason for this is not clear but one theory is that the pooled blood causes a slightly higher temperature in the scrotum than normal. This may reduce the number and quality of sperm made by the testicle thereby reducing fertility. Even if a varicocele is on one side, and Increased amount of pooled blood can make both testicles warm. Most men with varicocele are not infertile but if you have been infertile for two years and more, then treating it will improve your sperm quality.
Small Testis
The testis on the side of the varicocele may not develop as much as it should and end up being smaller than normal. This happens if a large varicocele develops in a teenager and can also contribute to infertility.
Sudden onset of a varicocele in an older man
If a man at 40 for example suddenly develops varicocele, it could be a symptom of a blockage of a larger vein in the tummy. Also, a solitary right-sided varicocele is unusual. It is advisable to go for tests to check out the underlying cause.
What will happen if a varicocele is left untreated?
In about 85% of men, varicocele occurs on the left side. If left untreated, it can cause the testicle to shrink or atrophy. The large vein also cause overheating that in turn affects the number, mobility, and quality of the sperm which leads to infertility
